Not Civil War....by a long ways! You have a 1st Armor Division Unit Crest. 1st AD also known as "Old Ironsides." It could be WW2 or even very modern.

Thanks Scout. Do not know how it got where I found it but looks like you nailed it. Has been in the ground for a long time looking at its condition.
Maybe WW2.

DI's (distinctive insignia) of this style, based on the design of their shoulder sleeve insignia, were approved for various armored division units from the 1960's to 1980's. (The original shoulder sleeve insignia design dates from 1940.) I can't see any division number on yours, but it should be in black enamel in the yellow triangle at the top. Often these DI's also bear the division motto at the base of the triangle: 1st - "Old Ironsides"; 2nd, "Hell on Wheels," etc.
