I've seen a few like it, they are thought to be French made but not all of them are marked "made in France" so it's possible yours was made somewhere else but it's identical to the french made version. They are made ONLY for a 12 gauge BLACK POWDER BLANK! A modern shotshell with shot WILL BLOW IT UP.
Date wise late 1800's is the best guess, they were made to be mounted on a small boat as a signaling device. Prices run around the 100-120$$ mark in good working condition with most of the original finish intact. Yours looks to be missing the lock pin that would have held it shut, that'll knock a few bucks off the value but looks pretty good otherwise.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I would imagine that its worth a hell of a lot more than a pinpointer!

hey there fellow treasurenet people...i was wondering if you can tell me the age of this cannon and what it might be worth.
i've had this for a few years. and would like to get a garrett pro pinpointer. with the proceeds.
thanks...
OWG..
it has cal.12 on it, so guessing 12 gauge

Looks like a great lakes signal cannon 1800's built in French Canada worth around 1,000 to 2,000 I would say

I bought one of those devices back in 1973 for about $10 from Dixie Gun Works. It's a 12 gauge Black Powder shotshell blank. It makes quite a boom for a little cannon. Don't know it's current value. Mine has been on the shelf for 40 years so it like brand new. Nice to know it's valued at $120. I may place it on Gun Broker which is the eBay of guns. I might get more for it.
