All my life, my dad and my grand father told me that this was a war of 1812 cannon ball. I know not a lot about cannon balls, but I'm pretty sure they didn't have two lumps on one end, and a flat spot on the other. So, what just is this thing?

Cannonballs didn't have lumps. Knowing the size might help ID it.

I've also seen heavy weights like this used for raising and lowering large candle and oil lamp chandeliers in houses.
Here is a reference from a book I've read many times over - 'Old Houses in America'.
