What is the 'wing span' measurement as well as the length? Does the hole shown at the bottom match the rivet on the other side?

It looks more like a cap to the leg of a piece of furniture than a walking cane tip, but it all depends on the size, especially the wing span.

Interesting find :)

I am leaning towards a Topper of a Flagpole hung from the side of a building. This is not to be confused with the Truk sometimes called Truck which is at the top of a Military or Government Building's/Installation's Flagpole! I am probably wrong but it just looks right to be one and not all Toppers were the fancy ones that you often see on Flagpoles. Also, George's find appears to have been handcrafted and it may date to the 18th Century or even before.

Aren't they usually wrapped in leather? ?

your thinking like a modern western type "saddle horn" , its the same idea but saddles didn't always look like this.

heres a visual for youthe first three pictures are a mid 1600's to about mid 1700's era saddle and the lats is right around 1830 see how it starts to look more like the modern ones .

don't take my word for it check them out over on the U.K data base website
