Is there any part of the mechanism that looks like it could also be a wick trimmer?
No , there are no cutting mechanisms on it . I've been searching patent designs , but I haven't found anything like it yet .

I think Taz420 is on to something here on the functionality. Probably not designed for use in common households, but maybe for churches or other places where either many candles were used or in places where candles were hard or not easy to reach?

If heat activated device guess it also could have been for some sort of advent candle (device placed to desired usage point)?

To be honest this reminds me of an old Christmas tree candle holder. Or an early Xmas tree light. They did use such.

Will the squeeze thing clamp to a tree branch? Will it swivel to set upright? If it does, and with wax inside, I guess Xmas tree candle also. If thats what it is, its a nice one! I always wondered how many trees they burnt down lol.

Your welcome. I am still wondering about the little tube on the side. I wonder if snuffer came with candle holder that had a metal rod that went up through tube to help support the wieght of snuffer.
