I found this old iron hatchet head and half of a horse shoe in a creekbed on a family farm in Pulaski County, KY. I am more of a rock and fossil hunter, so I don't know much about it. The eye seems to be full of hardened clay and rock, as well as the notch for pulling nails. It also seems to be a little deformed or melted and doesn't seem to have had a sharpened edge.
The horse shoe was on the surface and the hatchet head was buried a few inches down in the mud nearby. I have searched this area many times before and have only found rocks and fossils. The creek gets pretty rough when there is a lot of rain, so it is always exposing new things. I know that there is quite a bit of history on the farm going back to at least the 18th century. I would appreciate anything that you can tell me.
