I'm not into natural-state gold. Only in to coin/relic detecting. So I can only address the metal detecting side of your question. What entity owns the land you intend to go on? Federal? state? county? city? private? And even within the different types of govt. land, there are sub-categories of usage/over-site. For example: not all state land is state "park" land. And not all federal land is federal "park", and so forth. So while you could pan and detect on some types of federal land (I'm assuming), yet on the other hand, you might not get to detect on the federal white house lawn. So as you can see, to simply say "all federal" or "all state" or "all county", etc... is often an incorrect answer, simply because people are mis-reading when they read their state park's laws, or federal parks laws, because they incorrectly assume it means "all federal" or "all state" etc...

Anyhow, when you finally decide what type and sub-entity of land it is, do a google word search to find their website. Once their, laws, rules, codes, etc... might be a category to click on. And then in that, see if there's any prohibitions saying "no metal detectors". If not, then presto, there's your answer

But as for dry-washing, I have no idea, since I'm not into that.
