Yesterday I found an 18K gold ring with this marking on both sides of the inside of the ring but I can't make out what it says. Anyone recognize the maker? Because of the stones cut we know it was likely made after 1940. I'll keep trying to get better photos but so far this is the best I can come up with. It's heavily oxidized and may have been in the salt water on the Eastern USA for 75 years. Of interest to me because the three jewelers I took it too all wanted to purchase the center stone. Each said it was a brilliant round cut diamond with beveled edges I believe is how they put it and it's .41 karat and flawless. I've taken many diamond rings to these three places and never before has anyone wanted to buy one of the stones. This stone is amazing in the sunlight. Like nothing I've ever seen before. Attached also is a photo of the ring which does not do it justice.

Thanks

Here are three more photos. I used a black sharpie pen to fill in the letters then used Mother's polish to remove some of it.

From the photo the ring sure looks plated to me. Maybe it needs to be cleaned. Better photo?

I thought so too, in fact it looked much worse when I dug it up. It looked so bad that I threw it in the not so great junk part of my pouch. It's definitely not plated it's oxidized from being in salt water so long. It needs a good cleaning :)

LOL :)

I would do a rubbing over the letters and repost

I tried but could not make out what it said.

Fantastic rind, congratulations on the find. Hard to tell, but the "cursive' writing next to the 18K marking looks like "Olaine" or something similar. It may be a Hawaiian word. A high powered microscope should solve it. Best of luck and put that diamond away for retirement! Sub 8-)

Well, when I have this issue, I use Google Photo's on my windows computer in Chrome. In the lighting adjustment options there are six sub options. I will just play around with them for a while and you would be amazed what pops out when you raise or lower one setting or another.

It's definitely not plated, it is oxidized from being in salt water up to 70 years. It has at least one flawless perfect cut diamond in it. This is why I'm trying to find out so much about who made it.

Have you taken it to a Graduate Gemologist, or graded by GIA?

My wife is (amongst other things) a Graduate Gemologist, certified by GIA, and formerly employed by them as well, which is how I know about all of this...
