I found this old homestead in the woods. It burnt down a very long time ago. The main house had 3 chimneys. One chimney has an upstairs and a downstairs hearth. One chimney has long since fallen down. The (I assume) kitchen chimney has 2 sides with hearths. There are numerous small out buildings and at least 1 privy that I have found. The big out building, made of river rock is beautiful. Part of it has fallen down, and the floor does not feel solid, maybe wood, or just debris. It was also burned. I think it was quite a house back in its day. The front steps are done in river rock, there are 4 steps about 6ft across. You can see the house has been gone for a long time just by the one big tree that has grown inside the kitchen foundation. Thats about all I can tell you about it,,so any clue as to age?

I don`t MD, but I think this spot would take years and drive you crazy(er). There are bed springs and roof tin everywhere. I couldn`t imagine trying to clean it up before detecting. If you ever make it to WNC I`ll point you in the direction.

wow that would be a nice place to take winter break, for some RR Md,check the county gis site and the
register of deeds website, it might give info on the old house, and new or old owners

Go to the county library and look at some of the old county maps. Tony

You could use a shovel or even a small bobcat, and a really good sifter and magnet setup. That would clean out most of the large items and iron. You work a small section at a time, it would take time. Another option is a sniper coil on a machine with great discrimination (AT Pro has pretty good disc). Just start off cherry picking the steady tones

Get a metal detector now! Since you can you should search that place!
Such a big house must have been home to many treasures back in it's time...

Those still standing chimneys are really impressive...

I should point out...
A house like this... this size and type of plot...
Might have a cellar and a well... watch your step... let someone know you are going there.
Get permission and a detector.
This could be "golden opportunity".

that round part in the chimney makes me think more 1800s than 1700s - but who knows...

Thank you to everyone who has replied to this thread. I have tried to get info. online but I have not figured out just how to get what I want. Like I said,,I do not MD, I am just curious about the house. I am new to this area and have not met many people here. History is hard to come by here. I am hoping that the library might have the maps I am looking for. Thanx again.

Hi Lori,

I used to live in Clyde, right near you, years ago while attending university at WCU. I can't help you on the age of the remnants of the house in the woods, but I remember wanting to badly detect the Shook House in Clyde: ShookHouseHome. They've since completely remodeled it but when I lived there it was still relatively authentic and it was for sale at that time.

If you're curious but don't want to commit to buying a detector, most shops rent units. You could detect the heck out of it in a weekend.

My guess is after using one for a weekend...you will want one of your own.
