This button was found on a site that had an occupation context of (1) 1779-1805 and then again (2) 1816-1876.....which occupation context [1 or 2] do you think that this button is most likely associated with. It is a flat button with a noticeable mold seam on the back, running in line with the shank.....TX Frank

I believe that button design may be referenced in one of my books. Buttons can be difficult to find an exact date on it as some designs were used for long periods of time. With the bench mark on the back, I would say it dates to from 1800-1820. That doesn't mean it doesn't dip into the last bit of the 18th Century however. Backmarks on buttons are generally regarded to have come into favor around 1800, but a few have been found to date to the 1790's.

Thank you I have been told that the standalone single word "BEST"......on the backmark is rare.......have you ever seen another one?
