I am new to this site and collecting and have no idea what this is. Iif someone could help me out that would be appreciated. The rock is about 12" long and 6" wide and is about 20-25lbs. I found it in a river bed and randomly decided to break it open. There are seams of coal in the rock which is a little strange to me.

I got no clue...but more info for other members would help...like where it was found, this is a big country, and geological formations and rocks vary from region to region. To me, it looks like slate, imo, but I am prolly wrong..

I'd just guess brecciated chalcedony or even Rhyolite. How did you come to the conclusion of coal? Where was it found?

Don't think that is coal. I'm afraid I can't say what it is either, though.

Looks like a septerian, they are often times found associated with coal seems. I used to find them in the strip mines of Ohio.
