Japanese--1 Mon kanei Tsuho coin.

Some hisotyr:
In 1626 the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan introduced a new cast copper coin known as the Kanei Tsuho. The 1 Mon Kanei Tsuho coin was the lowest denomination issued, and served as the mainstay of the Japanese economy for over 200 years, until the Shoguns were replaced in the Meiji Restoration in 1867.

PS: to my previous:
This coin shows the characters Kan Ei Tsu Ho, which translates as "Current Treasure of Kan-ei". Kan-ei refers to the era of the Shogunate that lasted from 1603 to 1644, however the inscription continued long after that era--as noted above.

Hey tokenhead, can you post a pic of the front and back of your other kan ei tsu ho coin? and its measurements, weight?
I can narrow these down for you a little more but may take a day or two.

This was marked solved a little premature. True it is a Kan Ei Tsu Ho coin but there are hundreds of types and many are super valuable. this coin is what is referred to in English as the New Type or (shin-kanei). We know this mostly by the Ho character on the left. four characters are read 12:00 position (kan), 6:00 (Ei) 3:00 (tsu) and 9: (Ho). The "legs" on the Ho character and the "body" shape of the Ho character make it the new type. The old type body is more squat and legs are usually done in one less stroke. Old type started in 1626 till 1667. New type started in 1668. While variations continued through 1835, coins of this type were discontinued after 1768. We can (so far) narrow this coin down to 1668-1768. Im going to show the picture to a few people and maybe can narrow down further and perhaps a value.

Here are some common variations your coin has that are often used to identify different issues.
1. cursive head on Ho.
2. hooked left foot on Ho.
3. Kan has a "claw".
4. square, parallel, open head of Tsu.
5. dot of Tsu radical is cursive.
6. Tsu radical is "knotted"
7. head of Ei crescent shaped.
8. Right arm of Ei is hooked.

What is not so common and i cannot find any examples in three different manuals is the "open" body on the left side of Ho (marked in blue).
Could be a mint error but hopefully it is a rare issue. Certainly warrants investigation.

As DiscriminationDave mentioned, there are hundred of varieties to this coin, but each has same general image and is classified as a Kan Ei Tsu Ho coin. There are also many sources for you do study the various varieties--if you are so inclined. One book by David Hartill, entitled 'Early Japanese Coins' provides a finding guide for the Kanei Tsuho coin. Here's one page from that Guide that will give you an idea of the minute changes that create the various varieties.
Go down to Hartill's book (Japan section)and click on 'finding guide'.

Hey Don,
you should actually read the book, if your so inclined.
Hartill covers less than 20 % of the total number of this coin.
Of those KanEiTsuHo coins in his book, how many do you think he lists as ER* (over $10,000), ER ($1,000 - $10,000), VR ($500-$999) or even R ($150-$499)? Ive attached a screen shot from his book, his pricing guide.
I have the book, i can count them for you.
Simple point is, Chinese cash coins and Japanese cash coins are apples and oranges. American hunters dont get that and thats why i dont post my finds. Japan is as inundated with chinese coins as the continental U.S. is.
New trouble from china is those hacks are making fake japanese cash coins now and selling them online.

Chances are it is a five dollar coin but it's an oddball on account of the Ho character. I can usually I.D. these but this ones weird. I'm gonna take the pic to the pro after the weekend. We'll find out difinitively what, where and how much even if it hair lips my wife's sister.
