Hunted in my in-laws yard yesterday and found a little change (no silver), tabs, kids toys from about the 50s-60s, and this lid (or whatever it is). It's just a small piece of metal that has:

US FEB 4, 1896
JAN 31, 1899
FEB 7, 1899
" " ENGLAND
FEB 4, 1896
MAY 12, 1898
" " CANADA
JUN 15, 189(?)

It's about the size of a biscuit tin, maybe just a little larger. Any ideas on what this could be?

You can often discover what an unknown object with a patent date marking is by researching for that particular patent. Unfortunately, I can only find patents by their number (such as, US Patent #10,287). There are usually 50-to-100 US patents filed on any particular day. Perhaps somebody here has the ability to find your exact Feb. 4, 1896 patent, whose "diagram will show what the object you found is.
