I got lucky and found my first CW Eagle Dragoon button. We don't find a lot of CW stuff out here on the West coast. Dug this button in a 1850s gold rush camp and there were also CW troops in the area. My problem is I can't make much out of the back mark to narrow the date better. What I think I can make out looks like there is --- ATLIEN and the end of another word ---RYN ?? I can't tell how many letters there are in either. If any of this matches up to something it would be great to know. Thanks for your help.

It may be "Horstmann & Allien/NY". Allien joined with Horstmann in 1850 and they stayed in business until 1877 when he continued alone. Henry V. Allien was in business from 1877 until 1948.

Expanding on the information provided by Fyrfftyr1:

Your button has what button-collectors call an "RMDC" backmark, meaning, Raised Marking in a Depressed Channel.

Although Mr. Henry V. Allien (note the double-L) was a partner in the Horstmann firm from 1850 until 1877, the company stopped using an RMDC backmark by 1865.

In 1861, the US Army redesignated its Dragoon regiments as Cavalry .

So, your US Dragoons "eagle-D" button with an RMDC backmark saying "Horstmann & Allien NY" would only have been manufactured from 1850 through 1860.
