I know its expensive to refine your own silver/gold at home but im looking into investment long term, not selling tomorrow for profit.Im mainly a detectorist and amateur coin roll hunter,I dont hunt volume like alot of the guys here but enjoy doing about 1k in wrapped rolls each month. I have alot of scrap coins/junk jewelry i have collected over the last few years and need to consolidate it to make space in my SDB. Some jewelry has came from detecting, others have came from yard sales, pawn shops, flea markets etc. If i had to guess on weight,Id say i have close to ten ounces of scrap gold and silver by now. Im versed on the silver refining method but not the gold refining process,Is there any certain publications that are best for learning to refine gold,Any certain author who is the leading authority on refining precious metals? Ive read alot online and watched a few videos here and there but subtle differences in online processes make me think one way is the correct method and the other is the DIY not so proper method ,I need to learn which is which.Any input on this subject will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

There is a 2 part acid mixture that will dissolve the gold off the junk its on and float to the bottom.
Dont do this inside or around kids. theres alot more to it then this.

or you can buy or make a melting furnace and smelt it. but you will also need flux and sucks and a review on instructions.

Edit: float down or fall down? fall to the bottom!

obviously anytime you are working with acids(or any other chemical for that matter) you should always work in a well ventilated area and protect yourself from noxious gases. I appreciate you taking the time to answer but this isnt what i was asking about above.

There is no benefit to smelting it yourself. NO gold place will accept it as pure. The smelted gold must be "certified" by the people that are in the business of doing that. If you smelt it down, it is still just scrap and you'll still have to pay for the smelting process. TTC

Thanks terry,Thats what i was afraid of. I may just sell it at scrap prices and invest the money back into 1oz silver bars. I appreciate the input. I dont think it would be worth paying a refinery to get back.999 bullion,Adding in labor and shipping costs i think i`ll just sell the scrap and reinvest the money.

Yes, that is the normal route. Also, take out the precious/semi-precious stones before selling. They don't figure in the scrap price so keep them. TTC
