Just tidying up some blasts from the past (including some very ancient ones), largely for the benefit of anyone searching the site for information.
The ‘RAU F CO.’ mark is for the Rau Fastener company, established in 1912 in Providence, RI by the Romanian immigrant Lues Reiter. Initially they made snap fasteners before diversifying into buckles and other items. During WWII they held lucrative contracts to supply the US military with boot buckles.
Lues Reiter died in 1947 but the business continued, developing their production plant to include shipping docks as well as expanding their business to Canada and Belgium. Further expansion came via a merger with US Industries in 1968 and the Rau Division was then sold to Premier Metal in 1975, followed by sale to the Hanson Trust of London in 1985. In 1990 Rau’s officers borrowed heavily to buy the business back from Hanson to avoid it being sold on to their main competitor, Scovill but were forced to file for bankruptcy in 1994 and then ultimately bought by Scovill in 1996.
