This was my dad's. He wore it as a necklace but I am not sure what it is. Has anyone seen anything like it before? He found it detecting, it is gold very soft no markings or letters , the circle at the top held something, but what? The back looks just like the front .The top is where the circle is.

Interesting piece :icon_scratch: My first thought is 'Star Trek' or 'Star Wars'
Also, sort of reminds me of an Olympic torch and/or a lobster.
It might be relevant to a certain ethnic group. Does your Dad have ties to a particular culture?
And which way up was it worn?

What metal is it made from?

It looks like the open circle is only abot 1 cm in diameter, which pretty much blows my first theory that it may have held a "lucky" coin. The other thought I had was maybe a magnifying lens? Does the circle have any groove on the inside that might show the thickness of what it held? Is the any evidence that it could be tightened down around an object, such as a missing screw or something like that?

Hi! Hate to say this but it looks like a "roach clip" to me. Think I saw something like this in a movie or something.

It looks like a very decorative version of a cattle leader. I've seen much more crude models in a 1897 Sears catalog. Welcome to T-net!
