I'm sure it must be American. It's about the size of a penny. There is an 'R' on the eagle's shield, and I think 22 stars on the back. 1860s-1920s site.

Thanks for your help, any info would be appreciated!

Your button is shown in the button-book "Record Of American Uniform And Historical Buttons" as button RF-3, US Army "Regiment Of Riflemen." According to that book, the version you found (with backmark showing 22 six-pointed stars) was made in 1812 by the firm of Leavenworth, Hayden, & Scovill of Waterbury Conn.

Awesome. As soon as I saw the button and noticed the Maple flag, I knew it was from the invasion of Canada. Very cool stuff. Congrats

''1860s-1920s site.''

Which is why I like evidence based research. Quoting a Sites date narrows the mind. Happens on here a lot.
I'm not stating that the button was lost in 1812, because it could be any time after unless you found it in an Archie context (Date-able layer).

Its a very nice button in good condition - congrats.

Wow, what a quick and helpful response, thank you all so much!

The moment this button came out of the ground and I saw that eagle, I knew that it was one of my favourite finds ever. Your information has only hardened that feeling. CannonballGuy, a lightning bolt shot up my spine upon reading your detailed description, thank you so much for that, I might have to call on you again in the future because I do not have any such books. Thank you again!

CRUSADER, I did have a feeling that although the property was inhabited during that time, it was possible that the button was older. I wonder if maybe some veteran American friend of the War came and visited the house, proudly wearing his colours, and lost it along the treeline out front while dismounting or something. I'm not sure, but the whole thing just makes me tingle.

Thanks again!

Its a good find, you should have that reaction.
CBG knows his stuff & has the books to back it up. Anything you want IDing will happen fast on here its maybe the best Site on the Web for this kind of thing.
Keep at it.
