Can anyone identify this?

[ayahuasca]

It is bronze, from a colonial Spanish site, possibly mid-late 1500's.

But what is it?

The round hole in the middle looks like it might have been for a fastening, the other four holes look more ornamental.

Any suggestions welcome!
