can anyone identify the black stone set in this garnet?

Well it would be best if you could take a better picture of the specimen. The black you are describing could be just a really deep..deep red of the garnet. It could be a rock type called amphibolite. Which is a black rock that garnets are found within the matrix. It might be another mineral, such as hornblende. A black mineral that is found with garnet.

It could be a that rock type i mentioned called amphibolite. Which is a black rock that garnets are found within the matrix. It might be a mineral called staurolite that is found with garnet. In the picture there seems to be a deep green tinge on the mineral toward the bottom, it might be just my computer screen. But it might have epidote within the garnet. But I think the black mineral that you are seeing is hornblende. A black mineral that is found with garnets. Hope this answers your questions. I would still ask around to confirm. Nice specimen.
