I found this pewter button in Stafford County, Virginia. It is about the size of a US dime. I have been told that it may be a French button from the American Revolution, but no one I have contacted has ever seen one like it. Any help would be appreciated.
I have modified my posting to show a picture of the back of the button.
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to treasurenet!  Nice button!

In your opinion, is there lettering around the outter ring?

I believe this may be a late 19th or early 20th century "story button" depicting Don Quixote.

There is a photo of a button that looks identical similar, not identical from what I see in the book "Military Buttons of the American Revolution" by Don Troiani. SC Dragoons. Stating: This branch (Dragoons) is represented by a specimen which is tenuously attributed to South Carolina

A clear photo of the back of the button, regardless of condition would sure help in verifying the possible age and whether it could be a variant of the one in D Troiani's book, or if it is more in the line of what PBK has suggested.

I have found a Continental Light Dragoon button which is somewhat similar and they are in demand by Rev War button collectors, so it is possible you have found a valuable button!

A picture of the back would be very helpful. This could be very interesting as if it were Rev War its in amazing condition & most likely very valuable. (I know I'm copying what Don said, but I would like to see the outcome of this!)

Continental Dragoon cuff size would be my guess. Definitely Rev War and definitely American, not French as the shank is a cast integral style. I've found many continental(not dragoon like yours...they are rare) buttons and this one looks legit to me. I believe the device depicts a soldier holding a sword overhead, PBK...Don Quixote would be sporting a lance  JMO PS-message me if you want to unload it.

Back looks consistent with late 18th century to me, might be worth $1000+ 8) 8) 8)

You can see on my 16mm button that the sword is quite visible, like no doubt about what the individual is holding the finders button is not as clear so I can see why there would be some doubt.

Now that's a sweet button! I wish my dragoon style one was as nice.
