Can anyone I.D. this coin?

The coin looks like a Spanish Milled Dollar, and is the same size as a silver dollar, but it's made of copper.
I thought I could see the date 1812 on it.
Found it at a college that dated to the 1850's.

Ill have to dig out my world coin book....one sec...here it is....

Your coin looks to be a....wait a minute, theyre all silver ??? Not sure what yours is...maybe a really old attempt at counterfieting silver spanish coins?

I looked at my Standard Catalog of World Coins (1801-1900).During the War of Independence some 8 reale coins were struck in copper.I didn't find a match to your find,but there were other examples in copper.The ones that I found were worth a bit less than the silver 8 reales.

It's a counterfeit, all right, but likely a contemporary counterfeit that was once silver-plated in order to pass in circulation.
