Nahhh..... you guys are all wrong... going in the wrong dirrection even. Didn't you guys read his post?? He plainly said it was a little bit larger than a quarter.? That makes it exactly the same size as a hubcap for a Honda Civic!? That is what it has to be.... well, guessing from the aged appearance, maybe a Datsun 210 from the early 70's!? ?;D ;D ;D

I have something that looks simular to your "button" but it is much bigger than a quarter, I am going to be getting a new camera within the next month so I will take pictures of it and post it in this secting that way you can compare the 2 of them, but the item that I have is about as round as a baseball. I will post it as soon as I get the camera.

finally got a camera but the images aren't very clear to the point you can make out the little symbols, sorry I am new to this digital camera thing. anyways I will also try finding a link with this item that way you can see what it looks like with a clearer image. like I said its larger than the one that you have so it could be something totally different, but they look simular, its brass and the back is reflective as you can see. hope this helps but ya got to be the judge of if its the same cuz I am not sure. oh lol :P it would probably help ya if you knew what this is. its a imitation of han dynasty bronze-wares, a sunlight reflexion bronze mirror.

after doing a fast search on the google under the image catagory I am convienced that you do have a bronze mirror. wether it is authentic or not I don't know, but considering you found it on a dig then it just might be. seems like they come from china. it looks like they came in all shapes and sizes. but most of them seem to be round. looking at your pictures you have posted more closley I noticed that there is alittle green on there.... could that be a cupreous metals? ( copper, brass and bronze). I am pretty sure on any image search you will be able to find bronze mirrors, but try to look at some of the more oxidised and worn pieces, they look alot like the one that you have. anyways gl on identifying it completely, I am pretty sure that is what you have. ?gl and HH

As previously mentioned, that is a flat button. It is from the early 19th century. Circa 1820's to 1830's, would be my guess. I have found similar ones on old plantation sites here in coastal Georgia.

Originally it would have been gold plated (hence the "GILT" inscription, which is a common generic backmark), but the plating seldom survives on pieces that were buried in the ground. I've only found one or two with the original gilt remaining. (One of those still had a clump of the original thread looped through the shank!)

The "bump" in the middle is either a flattened shank (the loop where the thread would've gone), or it's where the shank was attached and later fell off.
