Hello I just got a metal detector for christmas and I'm having trouble finding a good place to start hunting... I've been to the usual spots like the beach and the park but I want to go somewhere that might require a little hiking for relics. I live in Ventura CA and I was wondering if someone could help me by looking on google earth and spoting some cool spots or spots worth searching. Thanks

My response would be to contact some MD clubs in your local area. Don't know if just looking at a map will give any useful info. You have to determine what activities have happened in past years in the areas you want to search, i.e., mining towns, ghost towns, etc.

Now that you are hooked, you can spend the bad weather days doing research.History of the area, who, what, and where.Old maps, the list goes on and on.You won't get bored, the more you learn, the more you want to learn. .......... Have fun.

Relic hunting is hardcore.... if this is your first detector I recomend mostly coinshooting for a few weeks at least to learn your machine. Parks beaches.... new coins mostly and a ring here and there.Jump straight into relic hunting and you'll likely dig so much junk your metal detector will wind up in the closet collecting dust.

My two cents

George is right, get some experience under your belt before jumping into the frustrating world of relic hunting. Then this spring you will be ready to head to the hills. Get some library books about the history of Ventura County. READ THEM and look at maps...both old and new maps. Visit a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) office and ask to look at the old maps..usually on microfiche. You can also buy modern maps there. Do your research, much can be done online these days. Get acquainted with some older people and ask them about the old days. Talk to people at the local historical society (but it's probably not a good idea to tell them why you are curious about ghost towns and mining camps). Relic hunting requires lots of research, not as much as wreck diving, but still lots of research, or lots of luck. Are you a patient person? It takes patience to be a successful relic hunter. But the rewards can be outstanding. Good luck.

SOUNDWAVE, YOU MUST LEARN TO WALK BEFOR YOU CAN RUN........
GO BACK TO THE PARKS AND BEACHS AND LEARN HOW YOUR TOOL WORKS, IT TAKES TIME TO LEARN WHAT IS WHAT, DON'T TAKE THIS WRONG. WE ALL WHAT TO GET OUT THERE AND FIND THE GOOD STUFF. BUT YOU MUST LEARN HOW IT WORKS FRIST ....OK ( IT WILL COME TO YOU IN TIME) ;)
