can anyone date this knife? or any idea of what kind it is

I think i have an old knife here can anyone possibly identify it? its so old and degraded the metal is brittle and black all the way through.....the buckle has been identified

no, I can see its broken, off-set means the bar is set back from the buckle frame

thats kool,it must have been a fancy one because of the beveled edges and the remnants of the silver plating that still exist on parts of it.

Yeap, had lots of plated/chromed horse buckles (rarely silver, although they look it)

Yeap, had lots of plated/chromed horse buckles (rarely silver, although they look it)

i'll take your word for it,somehow it wound up 6 inches deep in a site thats a mile in the woods, produces nothing but late 18th to early 19th century finds,with no modern trash.curious how things work

it's so degraded,we'll never know.in fact the metal is so old it breaks like glass.

nice,it was found about 4 inches deep near a well,one more item from the site thats producing late 18th an early 19th century items.no modern trash at all,and never been detected.
