On ebay they go for about 30 to 40 dollars from what I have seen.

Morgan silver dollar. Yours does not have a mint mark. Google values of Morgan silver dollars. Example the 1900(o) Morgan silver dollar is worth $75 but the 1900(s) is worth hundreds. Some Morgan's can fetch $300,000 +.

Very nice coin:thumbsup:

There are five different types (varieties) of 1878 (P) Morgan dollars. You might go online or to your local library and look up in The Official Red Book the differences, then you'll know which of the five types you have. In the lower ratings the values are about the same, but as the condition of the coin improves, so do the values start to separate between the types. Once you have the specific ID (as to type), you might then look up "Completed Listings" on Ebay to see what comparable coins (in condition and type) have sold for; personally, I'd disregard current listings.
Don...

1878 p is a fairly common date, and this coin is pretty well worn (VG to F). The coin has about $23 in silver in it. It would sell for $28 to $30 in a store,
