Calling all Brits & Revolutionary War folks

Hey Gang, Hopefully some one can help with this Revolutionary bone die. My knowledge is limited, but from what I understand, King George required dice to be stamped with the British Crown before allowing soldiers to take the dice with them to the Rev. War. If that information is incorrect, please correct me. Also, does the "R" stand for Revolution? If not, what? Thanks in advance, Breezie

Re: Calling all Brits & Revolutionary War folks

Congrats on the lucky bones. Looking forward to finding out more about your neat find. I did find this. Craps, known as hazard, reached many western European players and gained immense popularity in England and especially France. By the 18th century, French sailors bought the game of hazard with them to America via New Orleans and this is how it was introduced to North America. The rules of the game had changed slightly over the years and new terms were developed for different dice rolls. A dice roll of two was called crabs by the French sailors, but to spectators in New Orleans who were curious about the game, the word "crabs" sounded more like "craps" and that became the designated name of the game.

Re: Calling all Brits & Revolutionary War folks

Maybe from the Stamp Act period, 1765-66. All printed material sold in America, including dice, had a tax levied on them and had to be marked to show the tax was paid. It only lasted a year, but added fuel to the "taxation without representation" fire.

Edited...
After looking at some other examples, I think they are from that era. They should be stamped with a "GR", but your "G" was stamped right where one of the spots is at.

GR was the royal cypher used by King George III. Unfortunately, those are not my dice...just a good example I found on Worthpoint.

Super info... but we Americans tend to forget that the Brits had their own Stamp Act, that lasted a looooonnnng time. I don't think the American Colonies' Stamp Act covered making dice, so IMHO it is Brit made, and so harder to date. I have looked into stamps on Brit playing cards, and they go from the 1700's to the 1900's. The good news is, the stamps changed over time.

I think the GR means George Regina, as in rules :)

I won't argue the rest of your info but the British Stamp Act of 1765 included dice.

OK cool. I was going from memory.

I think the GR means George Regina, as in rules :)

Usually Georgius Rex, unless he was wearing a dress. :laughing9:

I think originally the bone/die was a "three", and the 3 holes on the left added later, which is why they cover the "G" and some of the crown.

Doesn't a three have a hole in the middle? :icon_scratch:

Thanks everyone for the GREAT info on my Rev. die. I can put a big ole fat green check on this one, and will close by saying:
Once a king, always a king, but once a knight is enough! :laughing7: Breezie

I see the green check. I think its a little hasty. What is it determined to be? I also found a crude dice with a crown and maybe a letter.. Ill post a pic tommorrow if I get a chance.

Daroofa can you post the link?
