The back-mark says, United States Button Co, it is 7/8 of an inch wide, two piece. The front is caved in but has scales at the top with a shield in the middle with the word police at the bottom. It looks like there is letters inside of the shield and some type of figures right and left of the shield. The background has vertical lines. I could not find anything on the internet on this button or the company that made it. Arty

Thanks Don for the site, the logo must have stayed the same through the 19th century. It seems that the Philadelphia police went to a local button manufacturer at some point. Thanks 4-H it was found two feet from a 1862 Indian head and an ax head. The picture of a police officer in his uniform in the middle of the pine barrens in NJ leaves allot to the imagination. Thanks everyone. Arty
