California tertiary rivers

Anyone have any experience looking for some nice rocks in the old river channels in CA? I just started digging one for gold but have found some nice looking rocks (or so i think.) I've got no idea if theres anything valuable in those channels though, but i have heard of diamonds also being found just a couple miles from where i am digging.

Nick back in the goldrush days, diamonds were associated with gold bearing areas ....have read accounts of miners having rough stones mounted so that they would know what to look for....
