Cunha: Metal thefts 'out of hand'
Farmers, ag leaders push for tougher legislation

Egan said she would like to see a fingerprint requirement for sellers, photo identification checks, pay-by-check and mandatory record-keeping included in the legislation. Eliminating cash payments would be a deterrent, most agreed.

Although a number of California counties have enacted tough ordinances regulating recycling companies, there is a push for statewide legislation because thieves tend to go where the laws are more lax. At least two metal-theft bills are making their way through the Legislature, but their authors said the lobbyists for the recycling industry are fighting back.

It doesn't bother me to give finger prints or receive a check instead of cash. I really like it simple like it is now and I really dont think those measures will curb metal theft. Instead it will create a blackmarket. Thieves will get less for their "work" but in the end it just creates a middle man.

Maybe we need be proactive on this and find a way to police ourselves. I really dont know how, but maybe form a scrappers affiliated guild or union where we certify ourselves someway? Seriously, we could save ourselves ALOT of needless redtape etc. by taking early action.

That sounded good to me but........how?

Paper trail, paper trail, Fingerprint fingerprint, Name, name , Adress , adress = Paying taxes on what you get paid. This is just another way to tax YOU in the future. Would you want the government to tax what you find mding. WOW i got kinda angry :protest:

Agreed.

as far as Fingerprints, I am against fingerprinting any innocent person.

I have Never been Fingerprinted,
I have never bought a Gun because of having to Be Fingerprinted
for the Permit.

Fingerprinting the innocent is no better then Tattooing a Number or barcode on
your forehead for I.D.

if there is ever a federal Mandate that every Citizen must be fingerprinted,
i'll become a Criminal.

Funny you posted this Jeff my partner just called telling me all the scrap yard owners had a meeting today here in town.If they have to do all that extra work the money it takes to do it will be taken out of the price of metal they pay.... :cussing:

The issue is “criminal scrappers”, the ones that are ripping copper and other recyclable metals out of homes and buildings, new ones, in the process of being manufactured, and or abandon. The scrap yards stopped taking manhole covers, aluminum freeway railing, stop and street lighting poles and the likes a long time ago, so it not due to public property.

I know this because that’s one of the reasons we get fenced out of a lot of demolition projects. They don’t only lock them up for security to protect their equipment, or for liability reasons. Metal is money as we know.

I’m not for any regulations. It should be up to the recycler/buyer to make a judgment if you did or did not just ripped those copper water pipes out of someone’s home while they were on vacation.

If that situation occurs they could get a little detailed information, a clear name and address. That’s only if a seller has something that looks suspicious, like new wiring and copper pipes that look like they were just recently sweated together.

well said ANT

Your so right...aa

Went to the recycler today with a load of steel, pulled up on the scale with my ID in hand. Went to give them my ID and they asked me my name, I gave it to them and I had already been logged in to their computer. I guess they did it the last time I was there with a load. Went over to the cashier to collect my money, no ID needed again, logged in.

Big brother is watching.

When i was in high school i read the book 1984 and i remember thinking no way :icon_shaking2:

Believe it, it's here and it's gonna get worse.

If you have digital cable, they know when and what you are watching.

They track your your spending habbits when you use the card.

Your computer has an IP address, they know when you are on line.

Your gas and electric meter down loads its info.

What to do, what to do?..........

The allure of fast and easy money attracts alot of people and the scrapyard will buy anything coming in, even if it's still got the lumberyard celophane wrapping on it.

What to do to prevent big bubba from stepping in?
