Back in the days when a mere 15 or 20 miles in a day was a big affair, there were many many stop-sites along the route, not just the missions themselves. Actually, it was just expected that if you had a rancho/adobe on the route (and most Spanish and Mexican land grant ranchos were along this route), that you gave hospitality to travellers. So sometimes adobe sites are referred to as "stage stops", in the later sense of the word, when in fact, it was just adobe's whose owners also did business, trading, etc...with passing travellers. For this reason, they are great places to hunt. The El Camino Reale passes right by Salinas. We've found several adobe sites, which now, are nothing but a cow pasture, for instance. Reales, buttons, etc...
