I've recently gained permission to local fields that hold the history of a dozen old home sites all owned by the same farmer, most likely all colonial and definately early 1800's. These were all there in 1853 when Henry Francis Walling did his pulbication and almost all of them were gone by the time D. G. Beers & Co. did their publishing of the county in 1874.

Today's diggins were few but no complaints as I ended up with my first colonial clasp (and it still swivels!), a number tag with someone initial's on and a neat London button and is my first of this type with the flower or whatever it is on it, most I get are flat buttons. I hope these pics show them
well. Also not shown in the pics are three early 1800's small belt buckles.

I hope the farmer has time this fall to til up the fields, they need a good turnover :icon_thumright:

Ok, Kuger says below that's the suspender clasp is newer than that, any other suggestions? I don't know diddly about them really so I'm open to hear what anyone has to offer. Thanks!

Not to rain on your parade but if you are calling your suspender buckle you have pictured as Colonial,I am afraid you may be a little off.It is closer to mid 19th century

Great finds!!!

Really? Dang it! Well it's still a good find for me. I thought the pointy stems was a standard thing to the colonial era :dontknow:

Its a dang good find!!!Not often we dig them that nice!It is what we call a Ring suspender buckle. There was a brass ring on the "strap",coming from the front waist and it would hook onto your piece. There may be earlier types but we seem to find them in mid 1850's -1880 sites

Thanks Kruger. Come to think of it... I was at two sites this afternoon (same field though) and I was eyeballing some glass and pottery pieces that seemed 1850's or so where the clasp came from. That site had lots of iron in it too. Hopefully when the farmer turns it over I'll come up with a large cent with a decent date.

The baggage tag and the button are really beautiful! :notworthy:

Congrats,
Dave

The button is the earliest find, hard to date exactly but closer to 1830 than 1850 :icon_thumright:

nice finds! I agree that the button is your closest to colonial find.suspender buckles are stamped out brass as where colonial buckles are made from cast brass. you'll learn to identify items as you continue to detect and post. looks like a great place and wish you continued success! congrats man!
the pics below kinda show ya the difference in colonial and 1860's designs and workmanship
