Garrett CX II/Sovereign SX-2a Pro/Quattro
I've been waiting for the IDX PRO for quite a while, so now that it's here I'm going to detect even if it if freezing. So today after work I stopped by the old abandoned school to hunt. Hab the IDX and the Garrett CXII. Within 10 minutes with the Whites I hit a good solid quarter signal. I marked it and went for the Garrett's. It also showed a quarter and said it was 4 inches deep. So I cut a plug (quite a trick in near frozen yard) and pulled it back. Ran the IDX over the hole, still good signal. Carefully dug for 10-12 minutes stopping every half inch to recheck hole. Constant good signal ?BUT I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING! Finally I realized that my nose was running, my fingers were very uncomfortable, and my work clothes now look more like play clothes.
I'm going to buy a pinpointer (probably Bullseye II) and go back.
But I'm taking a thermos of hot tea and some thicker clothing. ?:(

Whew, that's some hard work GB. Looking forward to seeing what pops out. Just don't get pneumonia trying. HH and stay warm.

You need to practice pinpointing, very rarely is there a target that can not be found
by simply pinpointing with the detectors own equipment. I also have a pinpointer
and it works great but if it were not with me I could still find the target.
That said, if you digg much deeper than what the depth is indicateing "IE" 4' and you've dug
8-10 inches and you find nothing, its very likely a large target such as a can, buried deep,
reading shallow.
I have found that a target like you describe is inveribly trash on a site that has been worked to death.
best of luck,
