My first several auctions closed today and it went well, until this. One buyer sent me an ebay message that simply stated "wrong address, please ship to ...." I replied to his message asking him to clarify as to why his address is now about 800 miles away from what is on his ebay and PayPal accounts. Am I over thinking this? I was under the impression that items are not to be shipped to posted addresses.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks, Paul.

all ebay mail is saved and can be retrieved if there is an issue. I would call Ebay to find out what they suggest.

It would not take the customer 2 hours to call e-bay and pay-pal to change there address, do not ship unless they do.After all they will have to sooner or later, and you would be covered.

You are taking a chance if you do. It would take the buyer all of 2-3 minutes to add or change an address to their ebay account.

I know I ship things to a different address than my billing address basically because most of the things I order don't fit in an apartment mailbox. Maybe the guy is sending this as a gift to somebody. As long as he pays you and you save the emails to cya, what's the big deal?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

edit: I'm not 100% certain, but I believe in order for eBay to cover you as a seller, the item must ship to their designated address on eBay. Even with tracking stating that the item arrived, I believe the buyer could state they never received the item. If this works in the buyers favor, eBay would then refund them and you would be out an item/$$$.

As stated previously, ask the seller to kindly change their shipping address on eBay (at least temporarily) until the item arrives. Maybe it is a gift for someone and maybe they are honest and not trying to pull a fast one on you. There is still a risk and you should tread carefully.

Correct. Read this-

At the very least I would tell him that if he wants his bid to be honored he needs to update his info with Ebay and Paypal to reflect the same address as he is requesting you use. Explain why politely and clearly and wait for his response. He may be simply working out of town or something of that nature which is perfectly innocent but you do need to cover yourself.

You can refund the payment, tell him to change to the correct the ebay address, send a new invoice, and when he pays the 2nd time all will be well. I've never had to do this but it should work that way. When you refund include a message both on the refund, and through ebay to let you know when the address change is complete so you can send the new invoice. If you send it right away he might just send the payment and not change. I would also say something like according to ebay/PP policy I can not accept the payment and ship to that address... it has to be correct.

The big deal is you have to ship to the listed shipping address, the one which is on Ebay - and then PP, because if you don't you are not covered. Billing has nothing to do with it.

i wouldnt send it there, sounds like a hacked acct, " unless the email came in the same message as the payment, an email to ebay sounds like a good way to clear up any questions.

I would definitely look farther into this. As mentioned above, this can be a clear sign of a hacked account. Clarify why he wants it shipped there, and then talk with ebay.

I had more messages with the buyer today. He states he is a snow bird and goes to Texas for several months every winter, his normal address is Wisconsin. He forgot to change his addresses in his settings. He changed them over and verified his other address. All messages were through the eBay message system.

I never thought about a "snow bird" as an answer to this issue.

Thanks again for all the info and comments.

Paul.

Been there before. Not only different address but they sometimes give a new email address. I always report it to ebay and not honor the "sale".

I see there are a few or more untrusting suspicious sellers here. I go on vacation for a month at a time, and often buy things on ebay and have them shipped to a buddy's address in the town I am vacationing at. Never had a problem. Don't want to send my item to where I like, go find another buyer, I don't need or want to do business with you. As a seller, I'll ship wherever you like as long as I am properly paid for the item. It's a retail business folks, and the customer is always right.

If you have a hacked account, then it is an obvious idea to simply ask to ship to another address. For this reason, the seller has to be cautious. If someone says that to me, I will ask them the exact reason. If it is a good reason, I don't have a problem with it. However, I have had issues before. A buyer wanted a carburetor sent to a different address. My dad sent it to them. The seller without even seeing the item said that it was junk and pitiful and looked like it had been dug up and all kinds of crap even though it came off of a running truck. It turned out the person who got it actually was needing a 4 barrel but ordered a 2 barrel. The seller never saw the item. I am fine with it as long as it is for a good reason. I understand gifts, but I am not excited about the buyer not seeing the item and then leaving feedback off what someone else says.

Just because you never had a problem doesn't make it ok. So what happens when someone pays with a stolen credit card or a hacked account? Ebay and Paypal both say you will NOT be protected if you ship to an unverified address. "You must send the item to the shipping address on the Transaction Details page" (https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/security/seller-protection-faq) " As long as you ship to the address found on the eBay Order details page or the PayPal Transaction Details page, you are eligible for certain protections under the eBay Money Back Guarantee." (Should I ship to an unconfirmed address?)

"the customer is always right" is simply not true anymore, and anyone that has dealt with the public for any extended period of times knows this is a fact. I work in the retail business, and I teach all my employees that "while the customer is NOT always right, they are still the customer and need to be treated with respect." Unfortunately there are too many people who try to scam and take advantages of others to live by that outdated adage.

You could add an address to your ebay account in less time than it takes to write a seller, ask them to ship to a different address (which you have to type out anyway) and explain the reason why. Yeah, make the seller out to be unreasonable.

Untrusting and Suspicious sellers? Boy, aren't you barking up the wrong tree. So what was your ebay name again. I want to get something for free from you, after I have you ship it to my sisters house. Please make sure you list high dollar jewelry items only as I don't want to mess around with chump change, when I legally steal your merchandise from you, because you didn't follow proper Ebay/Paypal procedure. Ebay username please- ______________

PS-Your reply is very misinformed and you WILL BE BURNED one day if this is your practice. Mark my words.

But changing the ebay address is not going to change the address on Paypal if he already paid, therefore you will not be covered, and have to refund, send a new invoice and have him pay again.
