Judging by the engravings on the top part, the metal workings of the rifle it came from may have been beautifully engraved too, and not your run-of-the-mill rifle. Anyway, nice find.

In the 7th pic it looks like there is some kind of makers mark? Maybe its just me...

Yea looks like it's been upside somebody's head makers mark. :laughing9: Think it's just where it's been propped up on things over time maybe a rock,etc.

By the shape and the engraving on the top it is most likely a fowler buttplate. It is not shaped like a rifle buttplate, and wouldn't be a military musket with the engraving. Very nice find.
