buttons & coins in the ground for A-while!
Dug these today. The buffalo has date worn off-typical for these nickels. The wheat is a 1928D. The lead piece is about the size of a quarter with no markings. The large button is almost unidentifiable at this point but I did make out a south carolina palm. I found a smaller carolina button at roughly the same location in the past that was a post "war between the states" military school button. The small "DS" button has a backmark of Miller & ?. The rest of the backmark is covered in a soil concretion. All I know to do know is to put them in olive oil for a few days then gently clean them again with a toothbrush. Is the material that has flaked away exposing the green patina a layer of the coin's metal or is it some sort of oxidation?
