It's from WWII, an American button used on the field "herringbone" uniforms. My dad had one and I played with it when I was little.

And BTW welcome. I should have been more clear, the material they made the US WWII shirts out of was called "herringbone". I still have some of my dad's stuff he brought back from the war. Most of it I gave to my two daughters.

Smokeythecat is correct on your find's ID. More specifically, it is the front part of what button collectors call a tack-button or rivet-button. The photo below shows how that type was constructed and assembled. The other photo shows your find on US Army Model-1941 "herringbone twill" coveralls.
