It is kind of hard to get very good pictures. The only detail I can really see is there is a hole on either side of the little know sticking out. It has a rounded knob on the front and a flat one on the back.

Any ideas for removing rust from it would help as well

Based on it's size and on your description, as well as what I can see in the photo, and.. (and this is a big AND).. if my memory serves me correctly, I am going to say that your item is not a button, but rather a part to the plunger of an OLD wheel (brake) cylinder. Here is a photo of a newer one (well not really new, but more recent than yours would be if indeed that is what it is):

Definitely so etching for me to check into. After looking at the one you posted it does seem to look a lot like mine. I will do a little research and see if maybe I can pinpoint the year of it. Thanks tons for the suggestion.
