It's called a collar disc. It is essentially a button, but more modern than a lot of old ones you see on here. probably WWI era. Cool find!

you can see some examples here: Hayes Otoupalik . still not sure what the G stands for. Someone will chime in I'm sure.

Worthy55, please check the website "Dating Metallic Insignia: Collar Discs" and you'll see the info (and photos) there says your US Army Infantry Company G collar-disc insignia dates from 1926-to-1937.

Dating Metallic Insignia: Collar Disks

According to that website, the major clue which dates your collar-disc to 1926-1937 is the "background" behind the crossed rifles, being multiple crossed diagonal lines with a tiny raised acorn in the center of each square formed by the diagonal lines. Earlier and later collar-discs did not have that very-distinctive background.
