Hey guy's & gal's,I found this flat button yesterday and have not cleaned it yet.But look's like I'm seeing at the top KG maybe (King George) :dontknow: and at the bottom maybe a date inside of arrows with a reaf around the edge. Was wondering if this is what I seeing for sure or not as I've found many flat buttons but none with this for a back Mark?
Thanks For the Help!

Happy New Year ...Mike
Yea I know,Sometimes I think I look to hard. :laughing7: :laughing9: ;D But this is how I was seeing it and figured if I cleaned it there wouldn't be nothing left.So I thought I'd ask before hand.I've not got no button books and couldn't find nothing on the web.Might be because there is nothing like it don't know(not even what I'm seeing) :laughing9: But thanks Buddy and Happy New Year To you Too and family!

If it is KG, very unlikely to be the King. Its a circa 1830 button, that about it...

Nice find TK; can you clean it with a wooden stick, and keep the patina down in the embossment? Breezie

Cru,if there was a KG it's gone now anyway! :laughing9: :laughing7: ;D But there is some kind of date on it but camera won't pic it up very well tonight maybe I'll try tomorrow. Also had a few specks of silver guilt on it looked like at one time may have been guilted.

nearly all of them were guilt at this period, unusual to have a date, not seen one yet that has one.

Jackson campaign buttons were dated. And I think there was another type or two that bore a date. I don't recall any KG ones... :icon_scratch:

Thanks everyone for your time with this. But forget about the KG part cause i don't think it was truely there the whole time. But there is a date and to my eyes it looks to be 1846 or 1848 not sure on it as it has seen better days for sure. :D Here it is in sun light. :icon_sunny:

Pete, what's funny about that button is that if that is a date, the laurel leaves are pointing downward. usually when we see these wreaths the leaves point upward, not down. Is there a chance at all that if you look at it with the date on the top rather then bottom, it could possibly say "gilt"?

Johnny I've tried to turn it the other way but dosn't make it any better for me but could be now that I've thought I've seen a date that my mind won't let it go :laughing9: You know what I mean sometimes it pays to set it down and come back later and look and might see something different or at least it works for me.But here is a pic of it the other way. :D

It does look like a date. Can you use some warm perxiode and clean that area? Breezie

Yea I think it is to right now Breezie,And thank you for your help on this as well!
But I have no perxiode here right now have used it up goes fast around here :laughing9: And don't know how much more it will do for it as I have already used some Naval Jelly on it.Might be one of those things I have to just say it is what it is! :laughing9: As many of these buttons turn out this way for me coming from around the water! Take Care!
And if I can get looking better I'll post another pic.

When I see this post, what comes to mind is a style of flat button that I have found at least 8 of over the years and it has been tough to get a proper reading. After comparing them all, I have reached this conclusion: FINE ORANGE (at the top) wreaths (on both sides) and 2816 (Bottom) It took a few more examples to finally make out the last digit which was always a toss up between 6 and 8.
I do have 4 examples now that clearly shows this number.
I hope this helps.
Dave.
P.S. All examples are the same size (17 or 18mm across) and are fairly thick.

It could say "BEST" instead of a date. I have found several that say "BEST" up top and "TREBLE GILT" or something similar down below ("gilt" or "plate" or "plated," etc.).
