Any idea of an age range Patch.
Sometimes it helps to keep them damp while you are still digging too. I dug a pewter button with a star in a civil war camp years ago. Not thinking I put it in the plastic coin tube I keep to put buttons in. I had cotton in the tube to keep whatever I dug from getting beat around to much. When I got home the button had dried out and started coming apart. All you could really tell is that it was a button. If i had dampened the cotton that button might now have come apartBuckleBoy said:Please refer to my cleaning button post in the "Cleaning and Preservation" section of the forum. Without applying something to the pewter, pewter relics will crumble away to nothing. I can already see some rim loss on the button.
True, this button is not worth much, but you'll be thankful you had the practice when you find a real High Dollar pewter button.
Best Wishes,
