Re: Button with face

Thanks for the responses... ::) but I mislead yall on the exact size. I realized it is a fair bit smaller than a dime. The faces do resemble one another except for the neck line is different. I think the dude on the button has on a coat and maybe curly hair... and sorry for the flash on the dime...

Yes ,i know its not the same button ;D But may help you in your search for it .. I see now,I thought it was the other button without the shank..It's not as old as the coin button ..Looks around 1830s to 1850s to me.With the (extra back mark).. goodluck

Re: Button with face

After cleaning the back up a little, I can clearly make out.... *EXTRA* I . H . & . S

Weird they have a "dot" on either side of the "&" symbol but not after the "S". I'm not having any luck searching for the backmark. If I get a clearer face picture I'll post it.

Once again, thanks for all the help.

Re: Button with face

IH&S =Industrial Health and Safety. I know that there is an official title in Canada, but I am not sure if there is one here in the US. Is it possible this was an official's ID button in the mid - late 1800's?

If you look closely at the collar, it looks to me like a Civil War uniform.

Nice find!

Re: Button with face

I'll guess Lafayette, as depicted on buttons issued c. 1824-25:

Could the backmark be "L. H. & S."? if so, that would be Leavenworth, Hayden & Scovill (c. 1811-27), who made many of the Layfayette buttons.

Can't post pics due to copyright, but this looks extremely similar to the Lafayette medallion button shown on p. 414 of Albert's book
(#PC 31).

Re: Button with face

Also... I think that back mark is "L" H & S...

LEVENWORTH, HAYDEN & SCOVILL 1811-1827

Update: Never mind... PBK posted it already... :) I was too busy fixing the Napolean button to see it... LMAO

Thank heaven for multitasking, MJ... otherwise I'd never get in on these ID threads once you've spotted 'em! :D

Re: Button with face

Nice button! Good job on the ID PBK. Jim, you did a dynamite job of cleaning up the photo.
Tice's seems to list this particular mark (*L.H. & S* / EXTRA) as being only from 1824-1827. As always, I could be wrong.

Re: Button with face

After reading about the Lafayette medallion button, I saw something mentioning the "&" symbol is backwards...Which it is on this button and I didn't pick up on that either (or the I being an L ::)).

I'm going with the 1824 Lafayette medallion button. What does it take to get a check mark solved status?
