I've not seen this type, but here are the clues;

It has a Victorian Crown at top.
Its a late 19th C Construction.
The Thistles point towards a Scottish Connection but could still be a strong Canadian connection as well. (& roses for England!)
The V could be Volonteers but could be other things as well

might be a British Scottish volunteer military unit button from the war of 1812 era ..(with the british crown and time frame of finds ) --might have been a fort or "block house" /trading post type site set up in 1814 during the war of 1812 --that existed until 1844 ...about 30 years or so ..

Nope, you being lead by his dates, this is a post 1840s (at least). Most likely 1850-1900. Due to the Crown type & 2 piece construction.
