Two things. What you have there is a navy style button. There is too much missing to tell exactly which one it is. If the back is a 2 piece style with shank, it's after 1830 when that type of button was invented. If it is 1 piece without a backmark, then the button is from the Revolutionary war period through 1820's. It all depends on the back.

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate your help. The shank is definitely missing and I can’t see a backmark but this thing is toasty.It feels hollow,definitely not solid like the big flat buttons I’ve dug. So I guess that means its the two piece version? I took some more pictures of the back and sides any thoughts? Thanks again
