Well I'd say it has something to do with the state of Maine (the pine tree state), where you're at. The five point star also appears on your state logo, but directly above the tree. I can't find a military one (yet), but I hope this helps.

It's an early 1900's work clothes buttons, and listed as such in Hughes & Lester's BBB, Plate 299 - #50, pp. 684-86.
