I found one of those typical flat buttons, still had some gilting, but that's not my puzzle.

I figure it's probably late 1800's from all the others I've found. That's not it either.

What's puzzling me is the exact wording on the back. I can't make everything out
but what I can make out clearly is "TREBLE STAND'D" This is around the top outer edge.
At what I figure to be the bottom is a letter "J" and something I can't quite make out yet.

I am really not much on buttons or bullets. Coins are my game. This is not very important to me
but, because I can't find another example that has the words "TREBLE STAND'D" in that order.
Everything I find has the word gilt after treble, I'm confused.

Is this something that's just known in button circles? I mean that there are as many different formats as there are manufacturers? Can someone put my puzzling to rest? Seen this format before?

Here's a pic :

Not the best, I know, but the wording is very plain to see in person.

The wording starts around 8-o-clock and goes up and over the top.

The front is no help:

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

I read somewhere that the standard adopted by button makers for gilt was 1/96 ounce of gold per square inch. So a treble standard would be a whopping 1/32 ounce per square inch.

While "Treble Gilt Stand'd" is a lot more common, on smaller buttons words get abbreviated more than on coat sized ones of the same quality. Is this a smaller button?
So, triple gilt standard color is the meaning, if that were part of the question.

Wups! I'm sorry. I had already posted this on "Today's Finds" with size references. I forgot to say here that it is only about 1.5 centimeters.

Your example is the closest I found in researching. But, it's still different. I understand that they're abbreviating things due to size but...this one uses
STAND'D with an apostrophe. Yours has a smaller D and a dot. I'm not trying to be picky, just specific. I don't think I have "THE" button of the millennia. LOL
Just trying to pin it down on the scheme of buttons.

I do have an update though. At the bottom there is a clear "JD" and it appears to be by themselves. Maker's mark?

I did find another post with that mark!

In any case, thanks to everyone trying to help!
