something I found:
The Musette bags are made of a linen canvas that can range in color from tan to brown -- Green French bread bags were post-war issue, so we don't use them. The Musette was closed secure with two buttons, marked Équipements Militaires -- soldiers often carried two of these when going to the front.

The trousers used in 1914 were adopted on March, 29 th, 1867. They were modified in 1893 and 1897. The trousers have two side pockets. Since 1867, the buttons evolved as follows
1867 : made from bone, black
1885 : 4 holes, zinc
1893 : zinc, with subscription :
'équipements militaires' (transl. military equipment)
I bet if you post a picture the button wizards will have better info on it ---Todd
