button? pin?

I would love to know what this is. To me it looks like a cannon and the back shank looks like a button. I sent an email to a guy and he said he thought it was overspill but it appears to be part of the button, does not look like overspill at all. I hope someone can help me identify this.

The site is two very old foundations in woods. Thanks for any help!

... but I'd tend to agree with a lead seal. They were made in different shapes, a lot with the overspill :

It looks like a cast 18th C pewter (but high in Lead or might actually be completely Lead) button attempt. Clearly it failed & was probably chucked. I don't think its a seal because I see no signs of slots in the edge.

Although the above is earlier, it shows similar casting charactistics, just the loop failed & it had leaking from one edge.

I have seen similar designed buttons as well, just can't find a picture :P

Yeah, but what I can't make my mind up about is the date. Because it seems more Lead (nearly pure looking) than pewter which I guess could push it back further

another thing, in the overflow area on the front it seems to have designs in it, raised sections or carved. Do you think it was an overflow and they carved on that part of it and still used it? the back of the overflow is flat and smooth

I don't see any carving, maybe a close up is needed.

Not very practical as a button going through a hole with that lump on the side.

Crusader is right. This is an attempt at casting a button in a mold out of either pewter or lead.
