i'm sorry i can't post a picture, i'm up at my camp and i don't have my camera with me. I found something at a site that isn't incredibly old, but maybe early 1900's. i pulled this object out of the ground and i thought it was a button. it has crossed rifles with an "S" underneath the rifles. however, on the back there isn't a shank. instead there is a little piece sticking out that is threaded, like it would screw into something.

sorry if this description isn't very helpful, i'll post a picture when i get home tomorrow.
 

sounds like a screw type collar "disc" device --infantry "S" company --- these type of items normally date after the spanish american war thru early WW2 with heavy use in the WW1 era 1917 ish time frame ---good luck --sight unseen its my "best guess" --- Ivan

This is what Ivan is talking about. G Company here in this photo. Most likely WWI collar brass.

yep thats it ---dead on -- just a "G" on Da Cheifs one --- instead of an "S" like yours --- WW1 collar disc device**-- thanks Da Cheif
