Button - old, or just dirty???

I found this button metal detecting a year or so ago, and never thought much of it. Lately, I'm seeing all of these great old buttons being found, so I thought I'd ask if anyone knows anything about this button...

The front says EXCELSIOR on it.

The back reads WATERBURY BUTTON CO. EXTRA

That NYS militia button is AWESOME!

Depending on condition it might be worth some serious battery money.
